How did you get started in osteopathy?
I was treated in New York City by a Chiropractor with a great result. I moved to London and they did not have a Chiropractor school so I found my way to the BSO on Buckingham Gate. A Yankee in King Arthur's Court so to speak. I can still remember fondly having lunch in St. James Park and studying the various gaits of the girls going by.....for stickily professional study of course!
What inspired you?
Wanted to be a Catholic priest!!! When puberty hit that one was a goner. After University Osteopathy seemed to be the splendid mix of intellect, heart and soul together with doing something physical
How did you continue learning?
- books, courses, mentor, patients, etc The most important aspect of CPD is the stimulation and motivation of my patients. And through their problems the thirst to know more. That includes, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Every year I will read a number of books and magazines related to my work, attend courses when they interest me, seek out and question models of excellence ---mentors---
What is essential to keep on?
Motivation....to remain excited and interested throughout the years of practice. I am sure I am even more enthusiastic now 27 years after qualifying than when I first started out on this journey.
How to do that???
Be sincerely interested in people, curious about what you find and take care of yourself with the basics. Exercise, eat well, enjoy life, time for relaxation. If you do not take care of yourself you cannot give your best to others
What would you advise to people at different stages of osteopathy?
Never stop questioning what you find. Never think you have made it and whatever great cures you happen to be a part of do not believe the publicity (good for practice building) of being a miracle worker!!
